THOMAS ALLEWELL

Thomas Allewell is a black and white film photographer and darkroom printer, based in the North of England, UK.

His work has a distinctive abstract and minimalist style, with an element of suggestion and an emphasis on the interplay between the fundamental geometries and spaces within a scene, across natural and built landscapes.

Of most interest to him is imagery, whether it be of the more traditional or less conventional, that challenges the viewer and can be interpreted in different ways. His current body of work includes a series on the British Isles and Mediterranean, photographed between 2022 and 2024.

The British Isles series contains a varied collection of generally darker, grittier, and more hard-lined geometry driven photographs, that focuses on the island’s changing architecture, industry, and power and transport infrastructure.

Contrastingly, the Mediterranean collection comprises generally simpler and higher key photographs from the Balearic and Canary Islands, synonymous with the white rendered and more free flowing architecture and landscapes that predominate in these drier regions.
